Theraplay

Strengthening parent-child bonds through therapeutic play and attachment work

What is Theraplay™?

Theraplay™ is a special kind of therapy that uses play to help children feel safe, loved, and connected to their parents or caregivers. It focuses on building strong, healthy relationships through fun and engaging activities. Theraplay™ is often used in situations like fostering, adoption and when children have been separated from their parents, but it can also be helpful for children who have been alienated/estranged from a parent, to revisit and rebuild the severed attachment.

Theraplay™ techniques include:

1.

Marshak Interaction Method (MIM): A special assessment tool to understand the relationship between a parent and child.

2.

Theraplay ™ activities utilising the Theraplay ™ dimensions.

3.

Group Theraplay ™, for siblings or families as well as in schools.

4.

The use of Theraplay ™ materials during sessions.

Additional Information from The Theraplay™ Insitute:

Theraplay™ is an evidence-based therapy that has been recognised by the Association of Play Therapy as one of the most important play therapy approaches for children. It was developed over 50 years ago and is used worldwide to support healthy child-caregiver attachment. The therapy involves guiding parents and children through playful games, challenging activities, and nurturing interactions to help children feel secure, cared for, and connected.

Examples from Our Work:

Building Trust and Connection: In one case, we used Theraplay™ to help a child who had been separated from their parent. Through fun games and activities, the child began to feel more secure and connected to their parent.

Supporting Emotional Healing: Another child, who had experienced trauma, benefited from Theraplay™ by engaging in playful activities. This helped the child express their feelings and start the healing process.
